The Gorschs experienced another first this spring... first kid in soccer! Sadie has been asking to play soccer for awhile now (not interested in t-ball, but really wanted to try soccer). A friend told me a about a soccer program at her church called "Soccer Sundays." The kids have to be going into K to start so I checked into it. I liked this program because it was a shorter season and less time requirements then most others.
The program runs on Sunday afternoons. The days starts with a group devotion given by the pastor of the church. (She did some really cool lessons for the kids!) Next they learn a focus skill for the day. This is taught in a big group by the head coach. After that kids work with their team coaches to practice the skill. Marc was Sadie's coach. After practice time the kids scrimmage. Sadie's age division had 3 teams so every week she played 2 short games with one practice period. At the end of each day they announced "team of the week" and that team got to pick a special snack. Sadie had 8 games total. When we signed her up I figured there would be some weeks that just Marc and Sadie would go, but Macey, Kinnick, and I ended up making it to all the games--they loved playing on the side lines.
Sadie's friend, Amberly was on her team--the girls were very excited to be together. We had a few games in freezing cold temps with lots of wind and ended our season with some blazing hot temps (mid-March to mid--June). Not every week was easy; a few times Sadie didn't want to go. She persevered and by her last game she was sad that it was over. She has expressed interest in playing again next spring. Marc also persevered--he will tell you that coaching 4-6 year olds who have never played soccer before is not the most fun job ever. He did a great job, nonetheless!
It was fun to watch Sadie improve during her time playing. I'm pretty sure we do NOT have a mini-Mia Hamm on our hands, but she had fun and worked hard. I'm a proud momma!
