Sadie's Sale

April 23:  Sadie started talking to me in January of this year about having a book sale to race money for something.  She read an article in a magazine about a "girl's on the run" group who did community service activities such as making blankets for a local animal shelter.  Shew as inspired to do something.  We talked back and forth throwing out different ideas.  Sadie even made posters advertising her sale and rode her bike around town to hang them up.  We finally agreed that she could do her book sale during all-town garage sale weekend.  We also decided to add a bake sale to the mix.  Sadie worked hard collecting books in the months and weeks leading up to her sale.  She also determined that she wanted to donate her money to an animal shelter.  I helped her research the Will County Humane Society (located in Shorewood).  She printed off a list of donations accepted from their website and called to see what items they were currently most in need of.  She also asked questioned about what qualifications were needed to be a volunteer.  Together we organized her books and agreed on the price of 50 cents per book.  Sadie helped make a list of items for the bake sale and she designed a poster for her sale.  She set up Thursday after school while I was getting my garage sale ready and she was also open Friday (Macey ran it during school) and Saturday.

Sadie made over $100!  I took her shopping and we purchased dog food, cat food, cat litter, and cat/dog toys.  Sadie, Macey and I went on a Saturday to deliver the items to the shelter.  Sadie was thrilled to visit some of the dogs.  We got to help walk them and play with a few.  She also got to pass out some of the new dog toys she brought.  I am so proud of this girl--she has big ideas and big follow though.  She is an inspiration.  I can't wait to see what next big project she will think of to help others.
